The Peoria County Jail was originally designed and constructed in the early 1980's using technology typical of that era. The facility was expanded in 1999 to add additional cell space, a new classification area, healthcare area, vehicle sally port, four new housing pods, 6 new special housing units, a new booking/intake area and evidence storage facility. Due to the magnitude of the facility expansion and the length of time that the existing systems were already in service, it was decided by the architect that system upgrades and replacements were required.

The recent expansion project posed challenges for all involved because the existing jail and systems were required to function during the construction period. The consultants has decided that the existing CCTV switching system was obsolete. A new Vicon matrix system including speed dome, multiplexes, quad units and real time event recorders was installed. The new monitors and CCTV equipment are installed in existing and in the expanded new security control consoles located in "Central Control". The existing access control system was expanded to new perimeter locations allowing for more complete authorized facility access.

Special housing units were part of the recent addition to the Peoria county Jail. The control of these facilities is easily accomplished by using integrated controls for the doors, CCTV and intercom systems. The MicroCommDXI digital intercom system is fully integrated with the facility control system allowing for multiple simultaneous voice conversations to take place on the same intercom system. Because the intercom system is digital, switching and control changes may easily be made.

The expansion of the jail included eight cell "pod" areas. Each cell pod is equipped with an individual control panel that allows for complete control of the cells and associated day room. The control panels allow officers control of individual cell doors, complete voice intercom and paging access to the facility via the digital intercom system and local CCTV control.

Central Control is the nerve center of the facility. Full control of all cells maintained by the security office using graphic panels that show the status of all doors and allow the complete control of door locking, intercom, CCTV and paging systems. The operation of the existing control consoles was maintained during the facility expansion. New consoles containing the new hardware were fabricated to match the existing consoles. Cabinets for mounting the new CCTV monitors were constructed and mounted on top of the existing control cabinet.
