Thompson Electronics Company installed the closed circuit television system at St. Francis Medical Center. By assessing the hospital's needs and identifying key problem areas a system was designed that can grow with the facility. Currently fifty-three cameras monitor hallways, designated rooms and exterior areas. a matrix unit enabling the user to display 8 monitors in the most efficient manner controls these cameras. A time lapse recorder is also incorporated to record alarm conditions received from the infant abduction system or any activity deemed suspicious.

An additional "real time" time lapse recorder is used with a 16 channel multiplexer to record 16 cameras almost simultaneous, allowing playback of individual cameras.

Security is a major issue which hospitals are facing on a daily basis. Hospitals want to create a friendly and safe atmosphere that patient and employees feel comfortable around. Many hospitals need to increase security but must accomplish this without additional personnel. Electronic security devices enable the security department to operate more efficiently.

Following the birth of a child, the family should be able to enjoy their newborn and not be concerned about the possibility of abduction. St. Francis Medical Center alleviated this concern by installing an infant abduction security system. This state of the art system uses a transponder attached to the umbilical cord, wrist or ankle of a newborn. An exciter antenna is mounted discretely near the ward exists. If a newborn is carried through this area the transponder becomes active and an alarm occurs. This alarm alerts the security guard as well as automatically triggers the camera nearest the alarm area to be displayed and recorded. While the guard monitors the activity a security officer can pursue the offender.
